Can you overcome failing?
OVERCOME LEARNING CURVE ROADBLOCKS
When a leader derails, failing to learn is always a main factor. In the early days of failing, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with putting out fires. There’s much to absorb when it’s difficult to focus. It’s easy to miss important signals.
Focussing too much on the technical side of the business such as products, customers, technologies and strategies without learning about the culture and politics, will ensure you fail to understand the company on a whole.
To help you overcome failing in the future, here’s what you can do.
#TIP Plan to learn the right way
Many leaders have learning roadblocks or internal barriers to learn. Try to have an open perspective. You can focus to understand the history of the company and meet with long standing employees.
When you start with a new company the onboarding process should provide you with key individuals to ask questions and learn about the business. As a consultant there’s usually onboarding provided as you are only there for a short period of time.
Whenever this happens to me, I make time to schedule in meetings with key stakeholders myself. Remember you don’t have to wait for someone to initiate this for you. Learn the organisation’s culture and politics to customise your approach.
